Pasta and Rice Paint

August 6th, 2010

With this simple Pasta and Rice Paint recipe you can make all kinds of different colours of pasta and rice to make many different craft projects. Coloured pasta and rice can add so much texture to children’s art and they will love the opportunity to use a different material for creating their masterpieces.

What you  need…

• Rice and/or pasta
• Zipper bag(s)
• Water
• Food colouring in the colours you want
• Wax paper
• Baking sheet

What to do:

  1. Pour 1 teaspoon of water and 6-8 drops of food colouring into the corner of your zipper bag.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of rice or pasta to your baggie, seal it and squish it around until it is well covered.
  3. Spread on a wax paper-lined baking sheet and let dry. It will take 1/2 hour to an hour to dry and be ready to use, depending on weather conditions.

TIP:  For macaroni double the amount of food colouring, since pasta is naturally a pale yellow, your blue will look like green and your red like orange if you don’t add the correct amount of food colouring.

When your rice/pasta is ready, use it to make textures pictures, jewelery, to decorate boxes and make mobiles.
