Personalised postcards
August 10th, 2010
Going away on holiday? Before you leave, get out the paints and get messy. Make these lovely postcards to send to friends and family far and near.
Age group: 1 year+
What you need:
- Large piece of plain card (or cheat and buy ready cut plain postcards)
- paints
- sponges, brushes or fingers
- scissors or paper trimmer
What to do:
- Have your toddler decorate the entire sheet of cardboard with patterns created through sponging, fingers and brushwork.
- Use the opportunity to discuss colour mixing and to talk about the different textures created by using different tools.
Tips:
- You may like to do one or two colours at a time and allow them to dry before adding any more colours
- Sprinkle glitter onto the wet paint for a little extra sparkle!
- Use stamps and stickers to create postcard fronts
- Cut the rectangles first and have your toddler draw pictures or squiggles on to them (age 3+)
- When the card is fully decorated, cut it into small postcard sized rectangles and use them to send massages to friends and family.
TIPS:
- Take the opportunity to talk about letter writing and what postal stamps are for.
- Prepare one of the postcards with writing and a stamp and take your toddler to the post office or postbox and let them post it.
- Explain the process of writing and addressing the postcard, posting it … to it being recieved by the addressee.
