Birdie Snacks

October 9th, 2009

With the colder weather setting in, teach your little one about taking care of garden animals like birds by making bird feeder snacks.

Age group: 3years+

What you need:

  • A box of hoop-shaped breakfast cereal
  • String (length depending on how long you want the feeder to be)
  • a paper clip (I straightened and tied this to the one end of the wool so that it was easier for my 3 year old to put it through the small hole in the cereal)

What to do:

Thread the first hoop into the wool. Tie it with the wool so that it cannot fall off and serves as a stopper for all the hoops to follow.

  1. Thread the hoops onto the string and knot the ends together as for a necklace.
  2. Hang these tasty snacks on plants, hedges and trees in your garden and watch how your feathered friends enjoy their treat!

Tips:

  • Take the opportunity to discuss and look at birds in books or online.
  • Talk about the different types, migration, endangered birds and any other aspects of bird life that your toddler shows interest in.
