Magnetic fun

January 2nd, 2010

Children of all ages love magnets. They are easy to come by and there are some really cheap varieties in office supply stores. You don’t need fancy shapes or colours.

Age group: 3 years+

What you need:

  • Magnets (Try to get many different kinds and sizes)
  • Small magnetic and non-magnetic items

What to do:

  1. Show your toddler some magnets.
  2. Use the magnets to pick up small items from the table.
  3. Show her how some items are attracted to the magnets and some are not.
  4. Let her explore freely with the magnets and talk about what she has discovered.

Further activity:

You may like to make a fishing game by placing a magnet on the end of a string and putting some small items into a bucket or bowl. Let her go fishing for them.

You could even stick the magnets onto little paper fish shapes for fun!
