Snacking for a healthier YOU
November 13th, 2008
As a busy Mom, I am always trying to find quick, simple and healthy snacks that are good for me and the children, especially for when we are out and about. Here are a few ideas that work pretty well!
Treats to Try
Here are a few healthy snacking ideas:
- Keep plenty of fresh fruit and veggies at home so you can grab them on the go. Cut up melons or vegetables like celery and carrots in advance. Keep the servings in bags in the fridge, ready to grab and go.
- Keep healthy snacks with you. Make it a habit put some fruit, whole-grain crackers, or baby carrots in your bag so you always have some healthy food when you are out and about.
- Make it interesting. Healthy snacking doesn’t have to be boring. Give yourself a variety of choices. Whole-wheat pretzels with spicy mustard, rice cakes with a little peanut butter and a sprinkling of raisins, or a low-fat fruit yoghurt are healthy, tasty, easy and quick.
- Satisfy cravings with healthier approaches. If you, like me, love chocolate, try a hot chocolate drink instead of a chocolate bar. A mug of hot chocolate has only 140 calories and 3 grams of fat. A chocolate bar has as much as 230 calories and 13 grams of fat. Have low fat frozen yoghurt or sorbet instead of ice cream.
- If you’re craving savoury snacks, have baked tortilla chips instead of regular corn chips with salsa instead of sour cream. Satisfy any salt cravings with pretzels instead of chips.
Good luck and happy healthy snacking. Don’t forget to visit our Yummy Mummy section for more healthy snack recipes and ideas.
