Celebration Trees

November 11th, 2009

Using  dried up twigs to make trees for various celebrations is great fun and so easy. Children love making the decorations and seeing them displayed.

Springtime celebration tree

This is a Spring or Easter celebration tree. We have hung felt sheep, chicks and bunnies as well as paper egg shapes which have printed Christian bible messages relating to Easter and the Fruits of the Spirit.

We also have our palm crosses on it.

Other celebrations to think about.

Harvest/autumn/thanksgiving: Hang paper fruits, pumpkins, leaves in autumn colours, etc Write what you are thankful for on the leaf shapes.

birthday/christenings: Use paper balloon, candle or giftbox shapes and write simple messages onto them for the relevant occasion.

Summer holidays: Hang shells or other treasures found whilst on holiday. Add ticket stubs and receipts. Write place names and people met onto sunshine shapes and add them. Keep doing this over the course of the holiday period and you will end up with a visual reminder of all the fun you had over the Summer!

Valentines day: Decorate with paper hearts and love messages or poems. Hang chocolate hearts and miniature cards or letters in envelopes addressed to family or friends from a secret admirer.

St Patrick’s Day: Decorate with shamrocks and gold coins. Write that things that you wish for onto the shamrock shapes.

Father’s/ Mother’s Day: Think about your parents hobbies or loves. USe shapes that go with it and decorate the tree accordingly. For example- for a dad who loves sport, decorate the tree with paper balls, clubs, bats, boots, racquets etc) Hang little messages and chocolates on the tree. Decorate it in the parents favourite colour.

Halloween: Decorate with spider webs, spiders, salt dough ghosts, orange tinsel, bats, jack o lanterns, witches hats etc. Write some “spooky” jokes onto shapes and hang them on the tree.

As you can see, this idea really lends itself to almost any celebration. And with a little imagination, can become a feature of all your families special days!

BTW…My mom does not have access to a traditional Christmas tree where she lives (on a farm) and her solution is to use the biggest dried branch she can find and decorate that with Christmas decorations…appropriate for her area and it looks great too!
