Diwali Diya mobile decoration

October 16th, 2009

The Diya is a common feature of the celebrations which accompany the festival of lights or Diwali. This is a simple way to make paper diya decorations to hang in the window or doorway.

What you need:

Yellow or orange textured paper
Textured paper in a bright colour (like red or orange)
Gold cord or thread
Gold glitter glue

What to do:

  1. Cut out a large flame shape from the yellow paper
  2. Cut out a diya shape from the other paper
  3. Make a hole at the bottom of the flame and another in the middle of the diya.
  4. Tie them together with the gold cord or thread.
  5. Make a hole at the top of the flame and tie on some gold cord/thread to hang.
  6. With glitter glue or a gold pen, write ‘happy’ on the flame and ‘diwali’ on the diya. You could write this on both sides as it will move and spin when hung.
  7. These look really great if you make lots and hang them together.
