“I Love You” Day cookies

February 8th, 2010

Here’s a really sweet way to say “I love you”. Make Heart-shaped cookies using a simple sugar cookie recipe.

Age Group: 18 months+

What you need:

  • 345 g  plain flour
  • 5 g baking soda
  • 2 g baking powder
  • 225 g butter, softened
  • 300 g white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 5 ml vanilla extract
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll dough and using heart shape cookie cutters, cut as many shapes as you can and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.
  4. When cool, use red, pink or white icing sugar to decorate. Sprinkles and silver balls are also very effective.
  5. Place a few in celophane bags and tie with a pretty bow. They are ready to be given away…

Other ideas:

  • Put red food colouring into the dough before you cut out the heart shapes for a pink cookie.
  • Sandwich two hearts together with strawberry butter cream icing.
  • Using a straw, pierce a small hole through the top of each cookie before you bake it. When it is baked, thread a pretty ribbon through the hole.
  • For chocolate flavoured cookies, substitute about 50 grams of flour for cocoa powder.
