Ideas for Pancake Day

February 15th, 2010

Here are some rhymes and songs to use on pancake day. As well as other fun activities for your toddler to enjoy.

“Mix a pancake, stir a pancake, pop it in the pan.
Fry the pancake, toss the pancake, catch it if you can.”

Pancake Headbands

What you need:

  •  a strip of construction paper cut to make headbands
  • two construction paper pancakes duplicated on brown construction paper,
  • yellow construction paper cut into 1inch squares
  •  scissors, glue, stapler.

What to do:

  1.  Cut out two paper pancakes and glue to headband.
  2. Glue yellow squares of butter to pancakes.
  3. Fit it to your head and staple the two ends together.

Pancake Batter Finger Paints

Put some plain pancake batter on a paper or plastic plate. Add a drop of  food colouring and let your child mix it into the batter with her fingers. Make fun designs in the batter. Add a drop of yellow food colour or blue food colour. What colour does the batter turn? Talk about how the batter feels. Introduce descriptive words like cold, runny, slimy etc. Add some syrup to the mix and  observe the texture. What does it feel like now?

SING:

Pop a little pancake into the pan x3

That’s for my dinner tonight.

(pat hands together)

Sprinkle on the sugar with a shake shake shake x3

That’s for my dinner tonight.

(tap fingers on child’s head and bounce them up and down on your knee)

Pour on the lemon with a squeeze x3

That’s for my dinner tonight.

(give your child a tight hug whilst singing “squeeze”)

Toss it in the air with a 1,2,3! x3

That’s for my dinner  tonight.

(lift your child into the air and on 3, boost them above your head)

Write on your pancakes!

Use food-colour decorating pens available in craft stores . The markers are filled with edible ink in a variety of colours. Your child can write letters, numbers, or make colourful designs on his or her pancakes and then, they are ready for eating!

Pancake Party

Make a batch of pancakes and set out small bowls of toppings to taste and try. Let your kids get creative with toppings for their pancakes. Some ideas for toppings include:

  • Fresh Fruit such as blueberries, cut-up bananas, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, thin apple slices, etc.
  • Dried Fruit such as raisins, cranberries, chopped dates, papaya, pineapple, etc.
  • Shredded coconut
  • Chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, cinnamon chips,  etc.
  • Syrups such as maple syrup and fruit-flavoured syrup.  Let your children “paint” the syrup on their pancakes with clean watercolour paintbrushes.
  • Toppings such as chocolate or caramel sauce and whipped cream.
  • Grated cheese
  • Chopped green onions
  • Bacon bits
  • Sautéed mushrooms, onions, or courgette
