Handprint Christmas Tree
December 5th, 2009
This activity is easy to do with only a few or with lots of children and can be done with any age group. The result is a fun and effective Christmas tree which looks great as part of your festive decorations.
Age group: 6 months+
What you need:
- A lot of green construction paper
- A piece of brown construction paper (for the tree trunk)
- A piece of yellow/silver/gold construction paper (for the star)
- A large piece of paper for the background
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
-
Optional: Glitter, glitter glue, or paper ornaments to glue onto the tree
What to do:
-
Trace the child’s hand on a piece of green construction paper. If you prefer you could have children do green handprints on white paper, using paint.
-
Cut out the hand prints and fold the wrist over to form a small tag.
-
Make a lot of paper paper hands (the number you’ll need depends on the size of your tree) 15 handprints makes a small but cute tree and is about the minimum amount you can get away with.
-
Draw a tree shape (this will be the outline into which you stick your handprints) on a large piece of paper.
-
Paint or Cut out a small rectangle of dark brown paper (this will be the tree trunk) and place it below the tree.
-
When attaching the handprints, start at the bottom of the tree. Starting with the second row, make the fingers overlap the next hand a little bit.
-
Glue the hand prints in a tree shape, gluing the folded part of the wrist to the background. This will make the hands flap and a little more 3D looking.
-
Cut out a star for the top of the tree. Glue it on the tree.
-
Write a Christmas message around the tree.
Other ideas: Decorate your tree with glitter, glitter glue, or paper ornaments. You can also make the tree on a triangle shape (so there is no background showing).
