Turn your kids into "Sproutarians"

Eaten any healthy sprouts lately? Sprouts are super nutritious because they contain all the ingredients that a plant needs for life and growth. The endosperm of a seed is the storehouse of carbohydrates, protein and oil. When the seed germinates, these become predigested amino acids and natural sugars, upon which the plant embryo feeds to grow.

This "life force" we eat is filled with energy which is capable of generating body cells and supplying us with new vigour and life - and, for this very same reason, sprouts can even retard the ageing process.

Research shows that sprouts are among the highest food in vitamins. All of us can profit from the boost that sprouts provide. Sprouts contain good amounts of male and female hormones, as well.

They are not only a low cost food but are also tasty and easy to grow. Children of all ages can make sprouting a very useful hobby - so stop buying sprouts in the shops and let your child proudly contribute to the "table" - lots of fun for them, watching the sprouts grow.

Almost any seed, grain or legume can be sprouted though some are tastier than others. You can try mung beans, alfalfa, wheat, peas, fenugreek, chickpeas, radish, fennel, celery seed, lentils, etc. These are usually found in natural food stores.

Each have their own unique taste and flavour. Some are milder on the palate whilst others have quite a "bite". A little bit of experimenting will find the ones that suit your kids palates.

Tip: Remember to soak small seeds only for 4 hours and beans for 15 hours. You also can mix these seeds.

  • All you need is a 1 liter wide-mouth jar and a piece of cheesecloth or dishcloth to fasten as a cover with a rubber band.
  • Here is a nice combination of seeds. Put seed into the jar as follows: 2 Tsps alfalfa, 2 Tsps radish or fenugreek, 1/4 cup lentils, 1/2 cup mung beans.
  • Soak these seeds for 15 hours and drain the water. Afterwards rinse with warm water and drain well twice daily for about 3-5 days. (Mom will have to do some supervising here). I usually just leave the jar upside down in a bowl after the rinsing process. The kids love watching the sprouts develop!
  • The seeds will grow beautifully and abundantly in a few days.
  • Add to salads and even rice and vegetable dishes.
