Be environmently friendly when making your Monster hat by using old plastic food containers.

Age group: 18 months + (with adult help)

What you need:

  • A large empty plastic container (preferrably round) approx 15 cm across
  • crepe paper in appropriate monster colour, large enough to cover the container
  • silver foil strips or florists ribbon
  • at least 3 ping pong or polystyrene balls or cut cardboard circles
  • Glue and/ a stapler
  • hot glue and glue gun (optional)
  • thin dress makers elastic
  • black and red felt tip permanent marker
  • celotape

What to do:

  1. Make sure the container is clean
  2. Cut the crepe paper (about 36cmx36cm)
  3. Place the crepe paper flat on the table top.
  4. Sit the container in the middle of the paper and fold the paper into the bowl. Hold it in place with celotape and/or staples. Turn it over so that the container base is up and the hollow end is on the table top.
  5. To make the eyes, use permanent marker to draw on the balls/circles.
  6. Attach elastic to the eyeball using hot glue or tape
  7. Attach the other end to the covered container wherever you fancy having your dangly eyes!
  8. Glue strips of foil or florists ribbon to make crazy hair all around the container
  9. Wait for the glue to dry and you have a hairy, scary hat!

Tip: if you prefer, you could cover the container in some stretchy fabric and using a long arm stapler, staple it in place. You could then use fabric strips for hair and decorated pom poms for the eyes.

Carla

At some point in my teaching career I came to realise how little ‘real’ information there was for parents. I would get the same questions from friends and parents mainly about keeping the children learning and engaged and this only increased when I gave birth to my daughter.
