In modern times, with the invention of television, DVDs, games consoles, computers and other visual media, books have taken a less prominant role in our lives. So why is it still necessary to read with children?
Take a look at these reasons for reading.
- Reading is something that we all need to be able to do. Every time we go out we find it necessary to be able to read. There are signs, labels and directions, newspapers, books and instructions on how to work machinery. All of which are neccessary for daily life.
- Allowing children see you read lots of different things such as letters, cards, recipes and newsletters gives them positive messages about reading and helps them to realise it’s importance.
- Language is one of the ways we communicate with others. Reading is a valuable way to learn language and find out about the world.
- Reading makes learners. Children who enjoy reading are more likely to become confident learners.
- Reading is an enjoyable and often informative pastime. It can become a favourite hobby which children may enjoy all their lives.
- Story time can be special bonding time for parents and children. If you ensure that reading and story time is a relaxed and happy time, it will help build good relationships between you and help to show that reading is an enjoyable thing to do rather than a chore they have to do for school.
- Stories can help children to deal with the problems and fears they experience in everyday life and therefore equip them with the tools to cope with these issues.
