We have decided to do a series of activity and crafts articles to help you and your toddler make the most of the Nursery Rhymes we all know and love. Here we are looking at Pat a Cake, Pat a Cake.
“Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker’s man”, “Pat-a-cake”, “patty-cake” or “pattycake” is one of the oldest and most widely known surviving English Nursery Rhymes.
Modern lyrics:
- Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker’s man. (Alternate clapping baby’s hands and yours)
- Bake me a cake as fast as you can; (Pretend to stir bowl, then prick cake)
- Pat it and prick it and mark it with B, (Make a ‘B’ in the air) Put it in the oven for baby and me. (Alternate clapping baby’s hands and yours)
Things to make and do:
- Bake some cupcakes and have your child decorate them with icing and /or sweets, chocolates etc
- Find out about Bakers. What is their job, where do they work and what do they make? Try to visit a bakery.
- Sing the rhyme together and do the actions.
- Make colourful and fun fake cupcakes. (see How to make Fake Cupcakes)
- Let’s pretend: Set up a pretend kitchen with tools and ingredients for baking and cooking. Put an apron and bakers hat on your child and let them ‘make’ you some delicious treats!
- Make a paper bakers hat (see How to make a Baker’s Hat)
- Decorate an apron
- Sing: Hot Cross Buns, 5 Currant Buns in Baker’s shop and Pop a Little Pancake ( see words)
