This activity is really simple and lots of fun. It can provide a platform for teaching your child about insects and other creepy crawlies, as well as exploring shapes in nature. It is also a great way to get your little ones imagination going when you introduce imaginary bugs.
Age group: 3 years+
What you need:
- Any circle shaped items. Buttons, bottle tops, lids, stickers, stamps or paper shapes
- Glue (PVA works well)
- Large sheet of paper for sticking shapes onto
- Markers or felt tip pens
What to do:
- Have a look at pictures of bugs in books or online.
- Discuss the shapes that can be seen in their bodies.
- Tell your child that you are going to use circles to make some real-life and some imaginary bugs.
- Collect together a group of similar-sized circles and stick them in an undulling row along the backing paper.
- Now take a large circle and place it at one end as the head.
- You have just made a caterpillar!
- Use the felt tips/markers to draw legs or feelers to complete the bug.
Try creating other small bugs using circles.
