Create your own little ocean in a jar and learn a little about taking care of the sea.
Age group: 3+ years
What you need:
- A clear plastic jar or bottle with a wide neck
- Blue tinted water (use food colouring)
- Add small tiny plastic fish, sea creatures, boat, shells.
- Mineral oil
- Hot glue and glue gun
What to do:
- Fill half the jar/bottle with blue tinted water.
- Add the small plastic items and fill the bottle the rest of the way with mineral oil.
- Use the glue gun to put glue around the neck of the jar/bottle.
- Screw on the lid and allow the glue to set.
- Lay the bottle on it’s side and let your toddler rock it to make waves and see how the items move as if they are being bumped by waves.
Tips:
Take the opportunity to:
- Sing Row Row Row your Boat and 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive.
- Talk about sea creatures and look at them in books and online.
- Discuss looking after the ocean and living creatures
- Look closely at shells and spot patterns in them
